I. Project Background
Building facade measurement is an important work in the old building reconstruction project. The conventional method uses tape, rangefinder and other tools to measure the dimension of the building and draw the sketches manually, which is inefficient and difficult to draw the detailed outline of the complex buildings.
3D laser scanning measurement technology could carry out non-contact, fast and high-precision scanning of buildings, which overcomes the limitation of the traditional building facade measurement and greatly improves the operation efficiency.
II. Survey Area Overview
In a street facade reconstruction measurement project, Hi-Cloud used terrestrial 3D laser scanner to measure and mapping the building facade, provided the basic building elevation quickly and accurately. It is required to collect the point cloud data on site and produce the mapping drawings, the overall point cloud registration accuracy provided is less than 5cm.
III. Equipment Introduction
HD TLS360 portable 3D laser scanner is used in this project, which can finish the measurement easily with high efficiency.
Equipment Advantages:
1. Small in size and light in weight, easy to carry.
2. No need for precise leveling, just place it stably and measure.
3. One-key operation, finish data collection in 3mins.
4. Affordable price, unlimited imagination of application scenarios.
IV. Solution
1. Technical routes
2. Data Acquisition
Due to the large survey area and the number of trees, multiple scanning station were required.
1) Cover the entire survey area with as few stations as possible, choosing a distance of 50m or more and retaining 30% of the overlap area, for data registration.
2) Position the station at a higher position to scan directly at the building to obtain more target points and avoid blind spots.
V. Achievements
Elevation drawing using point cloud data
VI. Project Summary
TLS360 offer significant advantages over traditional total stations for building facade measurement projects:
1. Contaceless, all-weather measurement, with better scanning result at night.
2. Obtain high-density, massive data on the observed target, with high sampling rates and detailed description of the object’s details.
3. It has been proven that the overall efficiency of the TLS360 could be increased by more than 10 times compared to a total station.
Efficiency Comparison | Total Station | TLS360 |
Fieldwork | 4h for 4 facades of a building | 15mins for 4 facades of a building |
Office work | 2h for 1 facade drawing | 0.5h for 1 facade drawing |
Manpower | 1 person | 1-2 person |
Note: TLS360 360° scanning is more efficient in dense buildings |
